HUZZAH!

A celebration in Light. Kevin Dix wins award for lighting design.

The theme of the 2019 Student Scholarship Design Competition, sponsored by the Boston Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society, was Celebration.

“There are moments in life that hold a significant meaning to us and therefore call for special attention.”

Entrants were asked to consider an event, occasion, holiday, or remembrance (wether festive or somber) in designing a light fixture, powered by electricity, that is both an aesthetically pleasing and functional luminaire for an architectural space.

The original concept of my design, Huzzah, was inspired by a photograph of my daughter and her friends celebrating the 4th of July. That inspiration was then developed into a series of concept drawings. The initial concept drawing read a bit too mid-century modern and was reworked to create a more contemporary profile. The end result is a pared-down, crisp and elegant retelling of the original image.

Many thanks to the Student Scholarship Awards Committee for their confidence in my design, the award and opportunity to attend the Illumination Awards Gala.
